Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha,
has urged Universities in Nigeria to stop making English and
Mathematics subjects they have to pass in order to gain admission into
their institutions.
Okorocha expressed the opinion
that if relevant bodies do not work towards making this a thing of the
past, the Universities to lose out on brilliant students.
According to
him, making these subjects compulsory had frustrated many brilliant
students who could, for one reason or the other, not pass the two
subjects, out of their ambitions to have higher education.
Leadership
reported that the governor made this known when the registrar and chief
executive officer of the National Examination Council, (NECO), Prof. Abdulrashid Garba visited him at the Government House Owerri, with his team,
Okorocha
says the time has come for all the concerned bodies in the country to
help our education and also help students with the ambition of pursuing
higher education, by dropping the demand that a child must credit
English and Maths to gain admission.
He added that
making having a pass park for these subjects mandatory for admission
into the university has led a lot of students to indulge in
unconventional ways (even illegal once) to get the required credit,
while those who did not pass, but are actually brilliant, end up staying
home.
Okorocha also urged education bodies to
remain patriotic and show the spirit of sacrifice especially now that
the country is going through a trying period and President Mohammadu Buhari is working to fix the country again after what happened in the past few years.
